(This is one of the questions on the Stanford MBA app, btw. So if you leave a comment, you’ll have 1/5th of the application essays done!)

What matters most to you– and why?

What matters most to me is achieving my potential. That applies to every aspect of my life: spiritual, academic, physical, career, skills, etc.

Basically, do the best I can in everything and not miss any opportunities.

Something that holds intrinsic value for me in my life is the concept of life without limitations–a certain approach to freedom and the ability to choose.

I find it to be very precious, and also rare, that we really understand how broad the spectrum of possibilities are for each of us in what we do with our lives.

We have far more options than we really think, and, I really believe that one of the root causes of unhappiness for people occurs when they see their life as having specific, confining parameters that don’t include the things they really want to accomplish.

This is important to me because I don’t want to waste my life doing things I’m not happy with, or being *stuck* with projects or situations I don’t care to be in. I prefer living purposely and creating the situations and life experiences I’m most interested in having.

(As a side, this is also why I love entrepreneurship so much… being an entrepreneur gives me a professional excuse to see possibilities that don’t exist, and then make a plan and make it happen.)

I don’t think I’ll leave an essay quality response. But there are a couple thoughts that are triggered with today’s question.

    1. Enjoy the journey and be less concerned about the destination. In essence, have fun.

    2. Do more good than harm.

If I were filling out the Stanford MBA application, I’d say what matters most to me is getting into Stanford’s MBA program. :-)

Otherwise, it’d be a close tie between (1) my kids and (2) doing good things with the life that I was given so that I can die knowing I had a net positive effect.
