I’ve never understood why they exist. How is society better for having beauty pagents? Maybe they help others feel smarter. Have you seen this?

Beauty pageants only saturate our culture with more and more materialism and superficiality. I’ve dated a couple pageant girls in the past, and they were both far from what I’d want as a role model for my daughter… which is why the relationships never went anywhere. :) Let’s face it, despite what anyone says, pageants simply promote the woman’s looks, while the event attempts to include other subjects (service, talent, education) to feign the appearance of legitimacy. But nobody watches these things to see how smart these girls are…

If it is important just to look smart, to look caring, to look genuine, then beauty pageants are perfect. Some women who participate in pagaents may be all those things, but I know a lot more smart, caring, and genuine people who don’t care if they look it. If we are looking for role models its going to take a little more than a choreographed, scripted, 2 hour television show to find them.

Moderate amusement for the most part.

The people I feel bad for are the intelligent girls in these things, and yes, they are there. Many of these young women get started on the circuit so young that it’s clearly more about what mom wants, then it’s the only life they know. They could be pretty little Rhodes scholars, but society will lump them in with the eye candy idiots anyway, because they are pageant girls.

While they interest me very little, I think they are harmless and not the all-encompassing evil many of their opponents portray them as. We have competitions for those who can spell, run, drive better than others, so why not have some competitions for someone who can doll themselves up better than others?
