Setting Up The Site: $9.18
- I spent $9.18 to purchase the domain, “www.humancensus.com“. However, I did not set up the site there at first, but created a free WordPress blog at www.humancensus.wordpress.com.
- Midway through the project, I decided to move the site over to the original domain. This requires hosting, but I already have a hosting account for other sites I maintain, so there was no additional cost.
- (If I didn’t have hosting set up, it would cost $5-$10/month, or $60-$120/year.)
Coming Up With Questions: $0
- Absolutely free, especially when someone else gets to ask the question!
Images, Photos, & Drawings: $0
- I draw the pictures using the free and ghetto but illustrious Microsoft Paint (who’d have thought!). Then I save them as .jpg files, upload them to www.snipshot.com to crop & resize, then embed links from Allyoucanupload.
- Other photos come from the creative commons bin at Flickr. The artist’s only requirement for using the photo is that you credit their name.
Tracking Site Visits & Statistics: $0
- I use Sitemeter and Google Analytics to track stats. Both are free. Sitemeter requires getting a free account & adding some HTML code to the site template. Google Analytics is similar, but also requires installing a WordPress plugin, then HTML code.
Total Cost: $9.18
